What are quartz worktops made of?

Quartz is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s crust, and it’s one of the toughest natural stones you can get. There are many varieties of quartz, some of which are semi-precious gemstones. Since antiquity, quartz has been highly prized, and often used in jewellery making and as a material for sculptures, particularly in Europe and the Middle East.

Quartz kitchen worktops are made of around 90% quartz or more, depending on the manufacturer. The natural stone pieces are ground and bonded with resins, polymers and pigments to form a very hard, granite-like engineered stone worktop. The overall appearance of the surface may be speckled or flecked if coarse ground quartz is used, while finely ground quartz gives a beautifully smooth look.

The benefits of quartz kitchen worktops

In recent years, quartz worktops have seen a rise in popularity, and it’s not difficult to see why this wonderful manmade surface is great for kitchen worktops. It’s an extremely hard-wearing material that’s available in the full spectrum of colours.

The material is non-porous, stain and crack resistant and does not need to be sealed before installation. Quartz worktops are easy to look after – regular wiping down with soapy water and a soft cloth should be enough to keep it looking its best.
• Naturally occurring quartz comes in a wide range of colours including clear, deep red, purple, brown and black. Processed stone surfaces can be dyed to create a veritable rainbow of colours. As engineered stone, the colour will be uniform and exactly as you will see in the showroom. In addition to the natural glossy sheen, quartz worktops often have a patterning of chips of natural stone and minerals to add sparkle and glitter to the overall aesthetic.
